Shashikant Gangadhar Joshi is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow and Life Member of Institution of Engineers graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli, India in 1967. He joined the R & D Division of Kirloskar Brothers Limited, Kirloskarvadi as an Engineer in the same year. He had an opportunity to take extensive training on hydraulic design of pumps for six months in Sigmund Pulsometer Pumps Ltd, U.K and on R&D management in Administrative Staff College of India in Hyderabad. In Canada he had taken training on the use of software for CFD Analysis of Fluid Flow. He has also taken extensive training in the design and application of Hydro-turbines in the Haneda plant of EBARA Corporation, Japan and on design, development and manufacture of Canned Motor Pumps in the plant of Nikkisso Japan.
He has traveled extensively to U.S.A., Malaysia, Thailand, U.K., Egypt, Algeria, Sudan, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Hong-Kong etc., for business promotion and presentations and for imparting training
He worked as an Associate Vice President of Administration and Engineering Division in addition to R&D Division up to 1991.
He became Vice President of Kirloskarvadi Plant in 1991.During his tenure as a plant chief the company made significant progress in all aspects of Business Excellence as per Malcolm Baldrige model initially and later as per European Foundation model of Quality Management. Under his leadership the plant won many National and International level awards. Award from National Productivity Council at the hands of President of India, Golden Peacock – National Quality Award, 2 times FICCI R&D Award for new product development, State and National level awards for excellent Industrial Relations, Safety, Energy Conservation, Vanashree Award for a-forestation are some of them.
.From 1998 to 2004 he worked as Corporate Vice President of R&D and Quality, handling these functions for all 4 manufacturing plants of Kirloskar Brothers Limited. He superannuated in 2004 and since then worked as Technical Advisor exclusively for Kirloskar Brothers up to May 2009. There is no aspect of pump business which has not been handled by him successfully during his long career of 41 years as a pump professional. It covers everything, product design and development, application and system design, R&D management ,patterns and castings, machining, manufacture and assembly ,batch production ,mass production and production of “one off” engineered and special pumps, factory management and industrial relations, testing, trouble shooting ,refurbishment and efficiency enhancement of pumps by glass flake filled polymer coatings , marketing and so on. He has worked as a guest faculty for teaching “pump design” in the Post Graduate Short Course on Pumps in College of Engineering Pune-India for 2 years and for teaching “Innovation and new product development” in Kirloskar Institute of Business Management.
His work on a specially designed Siphon making and breaking valve system for saving energy bill to the tune of Rupees120 million per year to Govt. of Gujarat for their Saurahtra Branch Canal in Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Project has won him US patent. His Patent application for a special muff type coupling is pending both in US and India.
He has authored and presented more than 100 papers on many aspects of pumps like design, manufacture, application, testing, site problems and their solutions, energy conservation and saving etc in National and International conferences. Noteworthy among them were his papers “Development of 200 Kw Canned Motor Pump” presented in 2nd International Techno Economic Summit and Expo 2002, which won him the Excellence Award and the paper on “Concurrent Design as applied to pumps for mass production” he presented in the Conference of British Pump Manufacturer’s Association in UK and the paper on “Right Selection of Pumps” he presented in the Conference of Ministry of Irrigation in Cairo Egypt and the paper “Numerical Simulation of Flow through a Split Casing Pump” presented in the 27th Conference on Fluid Power Fluid Mechanics which won him “Dr .John Willie” Award and the paper on “Visual Cavitation Studies on a model of Primary Sodium Pump” in the Symposium on “Flow Visualization & Laser Anemometry” organised by ASME Fluids Engineering Division, Montreal, Canada in July 2002.
Under his leadership many projects like Development of Canned Motor Pumps for general and critical applications like Moderator Circulation in Nuclear Power Plants, Primary and Secondary Sodium Pumps in Fast Breeder Reactors, indigenous designs of large Concrete and Metallic volute pumps, Development of a series of FM (Factory Mutual) and UL (Under writer’s Laboratory) approved Split casing and End Suction pumps for Fire Fighting Application, Series of Large size Splitcase, Vertical Pumps, Series of Lowest Life Cycle Cost (LLC) pumps, Fuelling Machine Heads for Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) Engineered Pumps for many critical high temperature, high pressure applications, Establishing performance of Pumps as Turbines and Establishment of Heavy Pump Testing Laboratory and it’s extension for water testing of Sodium Pumps at Kirloskarvadi are successfully completed. He is considered as an authority in Hydraulic designs and Development of critical pumps..
Mr. S.G.Joshi was unanimously elected as the President of Indian Pumps Manufacturers Association (IPMA) for the year 2002 – 2003.
Himself a good golfer and a Tennis player, avid reader of books on management and innovations, lover of good food and music of all sorts he is a well-known multi faceted personality in the field of pumps both in the manufacturing as well as user community in India and abroad, especially for the indigenous development of pumps for Nuclear and critical applications.
After May 2009, he is working as a guest faculty in Pune University’s Business Management College (PUMBA) for teaching the subject of “Business Excellence” for MBA classes and Technology &Quality Management, International Business Management and World class manufacturing to the Executive MBA classes in the University’s Dubai campus and in VIT Engineering College for teaching the subject of Total Quality Management and Engineering Design as well as “Principles of Management” and in Sinhgad Institute for teaching the subject of “Manufacturing and Operations Management”.
Additionally he works as a Group Technical Advisor and Management Consultant for M/S Skylark Precitech Pvt.Ltd – Manufacturers and fabricators of .Sugar plant machinery and steel structures in process plants and as a Design Consultant and Business Development Advisor in Delval Flow Controls Pvt. Ltd an ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18000 company with API, IBR, Atex approvals specializing in design and manufacture of Butterfly Valves, Ball valves and Pnumatic and electrical Actuators with CE markings.
In the field of Business Excellence he works with a company “Systema”, Kirloskar Group and CII. With Systema as a Senior Assessor, he has so far assessed 5 units of Bharat Electronics Ltd.- a Defense Electronics major and he had an opportunity to assess Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited Hyderabad for CII – Exim Bank Award. As a Senior Assessor he has assessed all major Kirloskar Group companies as per Malcolm Baldridge model and Kirloskar Ferrous Industries and Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies as per EFQM model.
